Team BRE Returns to Land in Championship Form in 2005
After spending the last 4 seasons in the water, Team BRE returned to the pavement in 2005 in the Factory Five Challenge Series, sanctioned by the National Auto Sport Association (N.A.S.A.). After an initial test at the Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC in February, it didn't take Team BRE long to get back to victory lane.
BRE Wrapped up the East Coast Championship at Road Atlanta
In the first round of the Factory Five Challenge Eastern Series, held at the same Kershaw facility, Tony Buffomante piloted the #34 Challenge Cobra to a second place finish. After that disappointing outing, the team wouldn't be topped again for the remainder of the season.
Buffomante rattled off, 5 unanswered victories, wrapping up the East Coast Championship at the final round at Road Atlanta, in a fierce battle with series rival Brian Cates.
After the East Coast series was over, Team BRE headed to the famed Virginia International Raceway for the East/West Shoot-out - the Factory Five Challenge Series Nationals. Over the course of the weekend, Buffomante lead all practice and qualifying sessions, en route to a flag to flag victory, and the 2005 National Championship.
Team BRE will return to defend their National title in the Factory Five Challenge Series in 2006. In addition, the team will be testing and building new cars in preparation for a move to the Grand American Road Racing Association, Grand Am Cup Series full-time in 2007.
